The [[Southern Forest]] is the smallest of the nine [[Forest Regions]] of the [[Fifth of Trees]]. It is located south of [[Lake Bala]] and therefore south of [[Edilyn Forest]]. Its position relative to [[Edilyn (country)|Edilyn]] is the source of its name, as it is not the [[New Forest|southern-most]] Forest Region. It briefly borders the [[Western Wood]], and its southern and longest boundary is [[Talkyra Canyon]].

It has one major settlement, the large village of [[Malnec]], on the southern shore of Lake Bala. Other communities can be found throughout the region.

The Southern Forest, along with the other western regions, is not a country nor is it part of one.

==Culture==
The people of the Southern Forest are independent-minded. The community is somewhat well-integrated, but has no power structure. It is composed mostly of tiny hamlets spread throughout the temperate wilderness. [[Malnec]], the main town of the region, is not centrally-located and is not considered the cultural center of the Southern Forest; merely its commercial capital.

The [[Wild Dark]] is a vast [[Forest Regions|Forest Region]] that spans the northernmost part of the [[Fifth of Trees]]. Mostly at a higher elevation than the rest of the Fifth, it is an uninhabited boreal forest. The nearest populated areas to the Wild Dark are in [[Edilyn Forest|Edilyn]] and the [[Northwoods]].

=Geography=
The southern parts of the Wild Dark rest on a series of plateaus at varying heights, making the majority of the region nearly impenetrable. It is known throughout the Fifth for its impregnability and remoteness.

Being a boreal forest (taiga), nearly all the trees in the region are various types of hardy evergreens that can withstand cold temperatures and thrive at high altitudes. Lacking any permanent human population, the area is teeming with wildlife of all sorts, has no marked roads or paths, and is mostly unobserved.

The [[Fifth of Trees]] is a large forested region, said to cover one-fifth of the land. It is located in the northern part of its continent, bridging the habitable portions of its landmass to the desolate and vast polar region. It spans temperate and boreal zones, bordering mountain ranges, both oceans, and the highlands of [[Belegon]].

It is composed of nine characteristic [[Forest Regions|regions]]. These areas are mostly bound by natural geologic formations. They are somewhat analogous to recognized [[:Category:country|polities]] in some regions, though most of the lands of the Fifth are outside the territory of any government.

The overall region including bodies of water is quite vast; it comprises around 21,300 sq. mi. (~39,100 sq. [[Silvan (unit)|si.]], ~55,100 sq. km.). Most residents of the Fifth live among others in some form of cooperative community, ranging in size from clusters of individual dwellings in remote places to large cities that thousands of people call home. The highest concentrations of settlements are within the three established countries of the Fifth of Trees, as well as the western region that was formerly the territory of [[Mattinas (country)|Mattinas]].

A network of roads, many ancient, connects all of the settlements of significant size in the Fifth of Trees. Generally speaking, the population is densest where there are roads. In some places, navigable waterways serve in place of roads, with some areas being accessible only by water.

Small communities can be found many silvans away from paved roads and fortified settlements, in every region except the [[Wild Dark]], which has no permanent human population due to its intractability.
